What is an integrated circuit (ic) layout design?

A semiconductor integrated circuit is a product having transistors and other circuitry elements, which are inseparably formed on a semiconductor material or an insulating material or inside the semiconductor material and designed to perform an electronic circuitry function. An integrated circuit topography, also known as a layout design, semiconductor chip, or mask work, is the three-dimensional disposition, however expressed, of the elements at least one of which is an active element, and of some or all of the interconnections of an integrated circuit, or such a three-dimensional disposition prepared for an integrated circuit intended for manufacture.

A layout design is granted on the following counts:
- Original;
- Not commercially exploited anywhere in India or in a Convention country i.e. any country that the Government of India notifies in the Official Gazette for the fulfillment of a treaty, convention or an arrangement with any country outside India and which affords to citizens of India similar privileges as are granted to its own citizens;
- Inherently distinctive;
- Inherently capable of being distinguishable from any other registered layout-design.

IC layouts applications in India are governed by Semiconductor Integrated Circuits Layout-Design Act, 2000 and the Semiconductor Integrated Circuits-Layout Design Rules, 2001.

Our core services include:

- IC Filing, and Prosecution
We are equipped to represent our clients for registration of IC layout and advising them in the steps to do so.

The application for registration has to be filed with the Semiconductor Integrated Circuits Layout-Design Registry.
